This is a well-working fireplace insert that looks great and gives off lots of heat. Can't beat it for the money. I first shopped some local stores who asked two to three times as much for their fireplace inserts. While it otherwise is well-made, the side panels serving as the air intakes, are flimsy (thin steel) and sometimes rattle when the fan comes on. By moving them a little or using little shimmies, you can stop that quickly. I wish I would have gotten it years ago - it saved on my gas bill right the first month I got it! I had a local chimney guy install it, because it is very heavy and a dirty job - I am glad I did! I have a relatively big house with 2 stories and an open floor plan, so I never expected it to replace my two gas heating systems, but it definitely works great as a supplemental, cozy heat source. No more cold ash smell in the house with the closed burning chamber.

Uses slab wood very well, save big bucks

We have been using the 1401 for two years now. Put a 6 inch titanium flue liner in this year and it works extremely well. Without the 6 inch liner you'll waste alot of fuel. Slab wood goes for around 30 dollars a cord in Maryland. Cord wood is at least $100 to $200 a cord. That makes slab wood about 1/8 the price of oil. Everyone I ask says they can't use slab wood because it burns to fast. With this baby it burns as fast as you want it to. In the stove instructions it says to use smaller pieces to burn and it really works. You'll probably get less than 9 hours in burn time but the fire box isn't that big. I use extra fans around to distribute the heat more effeciently. Also, don't expect very much smoke out the chimney because it burns very efficiently. Thanx for a great stove.

Great deal. Works great. Beautiful to look at lite or not. Burns hot and quickly; damper does not seem to take down the flame much. Seems like burn time is maybe 4 hours before fan stops. Not long enough to go through the night, but still worth the money.

We use this insert every day in a central room to supplement oil heat in our 2500 sq. foot home. Had the unit professionally installed...the stainless steel liner for the chimney can be very pricey, but we think this unit and the install will "pay for themselves" in lower oil use. The webbed door is definitely a little nicer than the plain door. Fire can sometimes be difficult to get going, but once it catches, it burns steadily all day. Be sure to have plenty of help on had to unload unit and bring into house...it is very heavy and bulky with few places to grab it to lift. (that's without the fire bricks inside!)

The insert is of good quality and is performig great! It completely heats a 1,000 square foot area with ease. Installation was difficult due to a heat-a-lator being built into the fireplace. It required some torch and sawall work to open the damper area to accomadate the stainless steel chimney liner ( 2hrs.)

[...]My 1,000 sq/ft house with 12' ceilings is a toasty 74* even on the coldest evenings (20*F outside). For overnight I fill the firebox with 4 large logs before bed, 7 hours later at wake up plenty of hot coals remain glowing to light logs, and house temp is 68-70*.The brushed nickel door looks great, and fan is relatively quiet. Both thermostats in the house have been off since this purchase.

I ordered this on Tues, East Penn trucking delivered it to my door that Friday! Door shipped separately did arrive with broken glass, problem was rectified fairly quickly. Homeclick has excellent customer service.

Definitely loving our unit. Purchased in september and didnt want to write a review until the heart of winter arrived. I installed myself with a stainless steel 25 foot liner, was a little tricky getting the liner and insert collar to line up, but the problem was solved by buying the low clearance flue adapter. Started using the unit in the fall, and have used it as the primary heating source for a 2200 sq. foot home. It is on the bottom floor and when we burn oak with a low damper setting, the room easily hits 80 degrees. When the Temp is above freezing outside this unit easily heats the upstairs to 65-75 degrees. When the outside temp is in the 10's-20's its hard to get the upstairs above 65, but the rooms on the same level are very comfortable.

Havent had to use the gas furnace more than a few times (mostly when we leave for the weekend and cant keep loading the box). A nice sized log at night gives hot coals in the morning, and its very easy to start a new fire, by throwing on some smaller peices then loading it before work.

Another perk is the self cleaning glass. When i get the box up to about 450 degrees the soot on the glass burns right off, Ive only had to clean the glass a few times, and that was early on when i was still getting used to using the insert.

The only thing i do not like is getting the ashes out. I use a shovel and have to be very careful not to drop the ashes as i take them out and put them in a bin. I grew up with a stove that had an ash tray, and find that a much easier way to dispose of ash.

I have recommended this stove to two friends, one has already purchased and loves it. Other friend waiting until next season.

Hope this review helps, sorry for the length

The insert is not only beautiful we have the gold door but the view of the fire is superb. With the draft you can customize the fire to suit your needs as in this morning I have a nice slow burn going which makes the room very comfortabale. Very Satisfied

Overall OK
By Trex from Norristown, Pa on 12/3/2007
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Burn time is way lower than published by Napoleon. Gasket on door is coming out of unit preventing a good seal which produces an uncontrollable burn when you fill the unit with wood. Blowers are not Whisper quiet but are quiet enough to watch TV in the same room w/o distraction.
Overall, the unit produces a lot of heat. Keeps the first floor of my 2200sqft house at 73 when it is around 30 outside. I am very satisfied with this unit despite the door gasket. Once that is replaced, I am sure the unit will be controllable.

We bought this stove to supplement heat this winter with fuel oil prices so high. This insert is doing a fabulous job! I have just disconnected the thermostat to the furnace and we are going solely with the wood burner! It has also been a great place to gather the family around to enjoy looking at the fire. I highly recommend the web glass door for the extra couple of bucks. Great buy!!

Good for the price
By JillVerified Purchaser from Colorado on 11/14/2007

Fans make noise, Short burn time, Side panels flimsy, Takes small logs, Vent hard to openclose
Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

We have a 1700 square foot home we hoped to heat with this insert. It heats most of the main rooms very well, but it is difficult to fit larger logs to allow the fire to burn overnight. We have to get up in the night to add logs 1 or 2 times. If you ever owned a much larger wood stove, you might be disappointed. The panels on the side over the fan bent right away because they are flimsy compared to the other parts of the stove (which seem really well built). The stove is really nice looking with one of the glass door options - we get a lot of compliments on the look of it. The handle for the vent on the bottom of the stove is really hard to open and close (you push it in or out). We have to work it back and forth and in and out to get it to work. To be fair, we are unsure if the installation company did something to it to make it this way or if it came this way. In a nutshell, the cons are outweighed by the relatively inexpensive price of the stove and the good heating performance. It does heat the 1700 sq. feet we needed it to.

Service & Delivery comments:

The main thing I would do is make sure to do a good inspection upon delivery - open and close the vent and check all the fire bricks, and make sure the side panels are intact.

My girlfriend also cooked on top of the stove works great for stews, soups, tea. Definite deal amoung the stoves sold online. Fans are a bit noisey but all usually are that I have been in contact with.

Pros:

The insert heats my entire 2000 sq ft house with no problem. The only bad thing about this unit is the low burn time which is about 6 hours instead of the 9 hours rating by napoleon. The insallation was very simple, I completed it by myself in about 2 hours after the liner had been installed. Excellent unit for the price.

[...] I have finally got all the parts and run the stove. I heats well! When going full blast it raises the tem by about 7 deg per hour. The coals easily survive the night and if you `bank' it (fill with wood) overnight, the room will still be warm in the morning. The construction is pretty well thought out, the briks look a bit shaky when staked but they stay where they are supposed to be. The blower is made by Pabst (a well known German fan manufacturer). Overall, very nice.[...]

So far no complaints, hot fires, Glass stays clean. Blowers kick out the heat but make a little noise on high. You wouldn't notice while watching tv or in another room. [...]easy to install if you take the time to read directions. 2 person job. Shop around for chimney liners. I have small 1000 Sq. ft. house and it heats the whole house. Burn time shorter than expected but am burning ash. For the price you can't beat this good quality stove.
