We purchased a home that was built in the seventies and I believe our yard hasn't had any maintenance except mowing since then. I purchased this tool because our front lawn is so hard and compacted we couldn't even get a pick into it. Many spots the grass has died and its to hard to even get a spot to plant a few flowers. We recently had a couple of days of rain, so we tried it out. Wow! It worked so easily that even us old folks can use it without a problem. Now I'm waiting for spring to really put it to the test, when we add fertilizer and flowers.
I purchased this product with the hope that it would serve my lawn care needs without my having to rent a BIG and BULKY motorized unit that weighs approximately 300 pounds. This tool works well after you prep your soil by giving it a good soaking. The soil should be moist at least 4-6 inches deep. Sometimes, small rocks or pebbles may be a little problem, but not a major headache. Overall,I would recommend this tool for small to medium sized lawn and garden jobs.
Good for small yards or for doing a larger yard one section at a time. Works well when ground is not too hard (I had to water for a while as we've had a drought). Make sure you clean out the tubes when you are done or you may have to use a hammer and long screwdriver to clean out the dried dirt the next time you use it.
Worked great. The ground was not even moist due to a drought the past several months, but it still easily made the plugs. I would recommend this product to anyone.
A very good tool for core aerating small areas and around sprinklers/sprinkler lines. Works very well and with minimum effort. Easy clean-up as well. Robust construction: should last for many seasons.
In addition to wetting your lawn before use, I would also recommend you spray w/ WD40 oil into the 2 aerator pipe holes - this further ensures the cores much more easily pass through. Also, you need to carry w/ you a screw driver & hammer because @ times small rock will get stuck in the aerator pipe holes which can be, with not too much difficulty, hammered out w/ screw driver. This had to be done numerous times.
The weld around one of the hollow spikes began to part on my newly purchased aerator after about 5 minutes of use. I returned it. I guess the soil really needs to be drenched, not just moist. There appear to be 2 spot welds for each spike... the tool needs to be made in a more robust fashion, it is under designed for the task.
Very handy tool
Easy to use.

I had to buy a file and file out some sloppy welding on one the prongs. It was blocking the movement of the plug of grass through the prong. It was just sloppy workmenship. Now it works fine. I bought this online so I couldn't return it.
Make sure lawn is damp not wet. Unit will become clogged once in a while but its easy to clear.

Whilst this product is very useful, I have found it oftentimes hard to get into the heavily packed sandy soil of my yard in California's Mojave desert. This product works best when the yard is moist after a week's worth of watering. Somehow, I thought it would be less of a chore to use and clean. One side is constantly getting packed with soil and stops working. When it gets clogged, that side can be very hard to unclog--even with a hose and hanger!
Overall, this can be a useful tool, so long as the buyer/user understands that it is not entirely problem free.

I have compacted clay soil. Wasn't sure if the product would work. I must say it surpassed all expectations !!
