My only complaint is with the position of the thermometer. Given the high position, the temp reads substantially higher than what the food is cooking at. I drilled a hole on the side and placed another thermometer slightly below the cooking grates and have been able to approximate temps with this approach.
We have had this smoker since 1999 and are finally looking to replace it with another one just like it. I have abused it like crazy. It has been used a minimum of 3 times a week since we got it. We used to use it as a smoker and a grill but starting seeing a few years ago that using it 5-6 times a week probably wasn't the best thing for it. So now we only use it when smoking meats, baking potatoes and corn in the husk. I have not once put a cover on it. It is partially under an over hang. I would recommend it to anyone!
I have owned this grill for over 17 years and it takes everything you throw at it and more, It will cook for a small group or kick it in high for the big party. I have had many offers each year to buy this grill from me and I laugh when I tell them how long I have owned it.Then they laugh when they find out how old it is. Thank for making me the envy of my friends at cook out time...
